Our Story

At Franklin Angus, we're a young, family-owned and operated Angus Stud located on 450 acres in the picturesque Orara Valley, just 15 minutes west of Coffs Harbour on the Mid North Coast of NSW, with an average annual rainfall of over 2000mm.

Our Stud

Nick & Blair's passion for cattle started early on, with cattle showing and judging back in our schooling years. Nick worked as an Al Technician and Farm Manager until we were able to purchase our farm in Upper Orara. With an eye for quality and plenty of ambition, the dream was always to start our own stud, and in 2015, Franklin Angus was founded.

We started our herd with carefully selected foundation females from leading studs including Eaglehawk Angus, Wattletop Angus, Alumy Creek, and Anvil Angus - all chosen for their proven genetics, structural soundness, and maternal strength.

Franklin Angus is run under commercial conditions using rotational grazing to maintain pasture health and herd productivity. Our coastal environment supports kikuyu pastures throughout spring and summer, while oats and rye are sown for quality winter feed. All our pasture silage is produced and stored on-farm, allowing us to maintain a 100% pasture-raised herd year-round.

At the heart of our stud is a commitment to breeding performance Coastal Bulls and Functional Females - cattle that not only excel in the paddock but also add long-term value to our clients’ operations.

Our Breeding Philosophy

We're passionate about breeding but the real reward comes from seeing our genetics at work -bulls that perform and deliver measurable results for our clients year after year.

Breeding Angus cattle that perform is what drives us - but temperament is just as important. As a young family-run operation, it's essential that our bulls are quiet and easy to handle, which is evident when our kids can work safely alongside them.

Franklin Angus bulls are known for moderate birthweights, explosive early growth, natural muscling, fertility, structural soundness, strong toplines, and docile. They have a moderate frame, are feed-efficient, and convert grass into kilos. We take great satisfaction in seeing the results of our careful genetic selection and watching our bulls perform for our clients.

Our females are the backbone of our operation, and we place huge emphasis on maintaining a cow herd that performs well on pasture. The quality of our bulls is a direct result of our consistent, high-performing cow herd. Our females must be structurally correct, thick, and deep-flanked - but most importantly, fertile, feminine, and productive.

Benefits of Coastal Breed

Breeding coastal cattle in high rainfall, hot and humid conditions comes with many challenges that our environment throws at us. Some of these include Thieleria, 3-day sickness and Pink eye. Due to our coastal environment, the feet of our cattle are tested like no other. If they're not structurally correct with adequate heel depth, they will break down.

Theileria is a tick-borne disease that poses a significant threat to cattle with no prior immunity, especially when introduced to affected areas. With no vaccine available, early natural exposure is critical. All of our calves gain vital immunity from a young age through early exposure to both Theileria and Three Day Sickness.

Our approach was shaped by experience. After introducing cows and calves from outside the area, we suffered major losses to Theileria and were forced to wean the calves at just three months. From that point forward, we committed to operating as a 100% closed herd. Today, every animal is born and raised on our property, ensuring they are naturally adapted, resilient, and ready to perform.

By overcoming these challenges, our cattle develop the resilience and immunity needed to thrive in any environment —delivering a lasting advantage to our clients."
